Although his voice is not an especially sensuous instrument, Schreier is a consummate musician and, for the most part, the sensitivity, intelligence, and deep feeling of his singing compensate for his lack of vocal glamour. Those virtues are strongly in evidence in the songs collected here, which largely reflect the melancholy meditations of an outsider. Songs of this character, many of which are lyrical and reflective, sit especially well for Schreier's voice. In the more emphatic passages, such as the third verse of "Schöne Wiege meiner Leiden," Schreier's voice takes on a stridency that makes him sound more like Wagner's Mime than a lovesick poet, but such moments are few in this repertoire.
