Too intense and too bright to stay so hot for so long, her voice burned itself out. But in this 1991 recording, she sure did leave a beautiful Schubert recital. Her voice is powerful, her soprano is strong, her tone is imperious, and her interpretations always risk everything for dramatic truth and almost always win. Some might say that Studer was too theatrical. Indeed, some might even accuse Studer of pitching her delivery to the last row of the balcony. Possibly in her lighter-than-waltz-time performance of Die Vögel (D. 691) is a trifle too precious. Perhaps in her larger-than-life-size interpretation of Die Rose (D. 745) does Studer seem a bit too expansive.
