Seller's Description:
Near Fine in Very Good jacket. Book First edition, hardcover. xiv, 305 pages. Charts, black & white photos, line drawings. Appendices, bibliography, index. Near fine with one corner very lightly bumped, in a very good dust jacket with light edgewear and several creases along top edge of rear panel. Mylar cover on jacket. At the end of 1912 Jacques Schneider announced his intention of presenting an annual trophy for an international seaplane contest. The first contest was held in Monaco in 1913 and was won by France. Britain won the 1914 event, and then the war caused the suspension of the series until 1919. There were only twelve Schneider contests but they were major international events. The main contestants were Britain, France, Italy and the United States, but France never won after 1913 and no United States aircraft participated after 1926. Thus Britain and Italy became the major rivals. This book records the contests and, in considerable detail, the design, development and achievements of the participating aircraft; those which failed to take part; and the projects, some of which embodied very advanced ideas even if they were proved to be unrealistic. Photographs, three-view drawings, and some superb tecnical drawings complete this valuable record which was produced to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the last contest.
