He pondered over the text quoted by the little girl, and thought to himself, " Have I any sin that wants cleansing? and if I have, will this blood cleanse mine?" That evening, after his work was done, and he was sitting by the fire, while his wife prepared their bit of supper, the text came again to John's mind. He got up, and reached down an old Bible, which had long been in the house, but had been very little used. He turned the leaves over and over, to try and find the verse, but could not; however, many other passages he read fastened on his mind, for the Holy Spirit's living beams were beginning to shine on his hitherto dark and ignorant mind. The tears stole down his face as he read the following passages: --" For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life: for God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved;" "I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." "And I am sure I am a sinner," said John to himself; "why, I never cared about my soul before; I never thought about God: what wicked feelings I have had, and what foolish words I have spoken! I am a sinner indeed--what must I do to be saved? How I wish I could find the verse my little lady said this morning! 'The blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.' My soul wants cleansing, I am sure; for it's very black, though I never thought so till tonight."
