I am familiar with the WAVES, the navy Womenââ?¬â?¢s Reserve, but prior to reading this book I knew nothing of the SPARs who were named after the Coast Guardââ?¬â?¢s motto, ââ?¬Å"Semper Paratus, Always Ready.ââ?¬Â? This female reserve of the Coast Guard was established to free able-bodied men working the home front to join the war effort. The SPARs were decommissioned after World War II was over.
Fans of Sarah Sundin will be thrilled with Saving Mrs. Roosevelt by Candice Sue Patterson. Like Sundin, Patterson writes a well-researched story that includes intrigue and a touch of romance that honors the contribution of women to our nations armed forces, and that acknowledges the cost to those at home. I look forward to future books by this author, and new offerings in Barbour Publishings Heroines of WW II series.
I am grateful to have received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing via NetGalley without obligation. All opinions expressed here are my own.

SAVING MRS. ROOSEVELT
by Candice Sue Patterson
Growing up in Maine, as the youngest child and the only girl, Shirley Davenport always knew that she didn't want to grow up, get married, scrub floors, and do dishes, as her mother did. She wanted her life to be more meaningful and to be able to accomplish great things before she settled down with a house, husband, and a family.
Shirley's best friend Joan led her into joining up with the SPARs, the US Coastguard's Women's Reserve. The coastguard's thinking at the time was to have able-bodied women join up to free up men to go to join the war overseas.
Shirley ends up making difficult decisions in her professional and personal life, that have repercussions that reverberate among her community and will stigmatize her for long after the war is over.
