J. Howard Moore is not a household name today, but in the late 19th and early 20th century he was known as a spokesman for progressive socialist thought, for the theory of evolution, for science, and for an awareness of the kinship between animals and humans. Today his pioneering views on animal rights are occasionally referenced, but the context of Moore's thought is largely forgotten - the fact that the issue of animal rights was a part of Moore's socialist consciousness deserves more attention,
In this particular book Moore tries to trace the origins of various human values to the animal kingdom and the early human society of tribes. Although his materialism is at times rather mechanical, Moore is attempting to point to natural and objective reasons for the existence of various human values, in an attempt thereby to show how modern society may or may not have exactly the same need of such values. Although not free of certain limitations that reflect the times in which Moore lived, Savage Survivals helps broaden our understanding of the human context of animal issues and also of the socialist-humanist context in which animal rights ideas originated.
