It also includes drugs recently discontinued by the manufacturer or withdrawn from the market by the FDA, which may still appear in physician dictation. British and international spellings of generics are cross-referenced to the preferred US name and to each other. A useful "sound-alike" appendix helps prevent typing the wrong drug name when it is not dicatated clearly, or when two drugs have similar pronunciations. A complete abbreviation appendix features commonly-used prescribing abbreviations with correct punctuation, such as b.i.d. (twice daily) and p.o. (by mouth).
