Seller's Description:
Minor rubbing. VG. 23x15cm, xiii, 360 pp., PAPERBACK. Contents: Hebrew backgrounds--The New Testament: Satan comes into his own--Satan and Adam--The rise of the fallen Lucifer--Satan in the modern world ["Christians traditionally think of Satan as Lucifer, God's enemy, who rebelled against Him out of pride and then caused Adam and Eve to sin. But, as Ansgar Kelly shows, this portrayal is not biblical but a scenario invented by the early Fathers of the Church which became the 'New Biography of Satan'. The 'Original Biography' must be reconstructed from the New Testament where Satan is the same sort of celestial functionary we see in the Book of Job-appointed to govern the world, specifically to monitor and test human beings. But he is brutal and deceitful in his methods, and Jesus predicts that his rule will soon come to an end. Kelly traces the further developments of the 'New Biography': humankind's inherited guilt, captivity by Satan, and punishment in Hell at his hands. This profile of Satan remains dominant, but Kelly urges a return to the ' Original Biography of Satan'. "-Publisher's description].

I found this book to be a very interesting and relevant book. Dr. Kelly?s educational background and experiences gives him an advantage over many other authors on this subject. He seems to have knowledge of the languages ? Hebrew, Greek and Latin, and early primitive Christian authors.
There is no question that when you compare the Satan of the Old Testament with the Satan of the New Testament, there are noticeable differences. This book?s position is that they are basically the same Satan. His role is essentially the same today. He tests, tempts and challenges Christians in order to prove the genuineness of their faith and fidelity. He is not God?s archenemy, and he has been blamed for things not his doing. Over the centuries the infamous Satan/Devil has acquired a most undesirable reputation. He definitely is not a likeable character, and in Kelly?s words he ?is scheduled for unceremonious retirement??
Kelly believes that Satan?s biography, which I refer to as his resume, has been retrofitted to conform to many erroneous modern day beliefs. The origin of these beliefs is traced back to the source where possible. Substantially all Biblical texts where Satan or Devil is mentioned are examined.
I guess I would be classified as theologically conservative, and I was able to easily fit his conclusions into my theological thinking. As a matter of fact, I was so favorably impressed with the book that I obtained three more copies to loan to my friends
