The Great Cities/San Francisco is one of twenty-five volumes from the Time-Life book series The Great Cities. Published in the 1970s, this series introduces the reader to the various cities of the world. This volume portrays the many facets of San Francisco. Topics covered include the Gold Rush, hills in the city, banking, Sam Brannan, cable cars, the Golden Gate Bridge, railroads, Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART), neighborhoods, street entertainers, eccentrics and nonconformists, the Haight-Ashbury district, Chinatown, and the earthquake of 1906. We also learn about the rivalry between San Francisco and Oakland. Numerous photographs supplement the narrative (photographer Jay Maisel has done an excellent job with pictures); author Geoffrey Moorhouse has also done an excellent job of depicting the character of this fascinating city in the text. I especially enjoyed the chapter on the earthquake of 1906. Though dated, this book is still a concise and informative portrayal of one of America's most important cities.
