Weaving used to be used for producing useful items like blankets, pack straps, mats, baskets and sashes. Eventually these items used color to be decorative and distinguish them from those made by other people. The Salish Indians still practice this traditional weaving techniques but now produce more modern items such as rugs, wall hangings, tapestries, chair covers and runners.
