Not illustrated. 1894 Excerpt: ..."Am I then become your enemy because I have told you the truth?" 2 Such feelings of resentment, however, did not find a voice till after the Apostle's departure; while he was present, " all showed themselves zealous in the good cause";3 his sermons overmastered their minds; the generosity, nay, the tenderness, of his love for them touched the very depths of their hearts; they forgot the blunt plainness of his language, overwhelmed by the truths with which it palpitated, --this Heavenly Jerusalem on High,4 the Israel of God,6 with Jesus so marvellously depicted that His Cross seemed to rise up before their very eyes.6 These easily moved, but at the same time sincere and upright Christians, returned at once to the calm and purity of the Faith. Later on Paul bore witness to their high character and how they once more " were obedient to the truth and were running the race in the eagerness of their fervor."7 He profited by their good intentions to organize that collection destined for the Church at Jerusalem which soon we shall find occupying a great deal of his attention and involving an additional care in his ministry.8 Paul left Phrygian territory at the very point where two years earlier the Spirit of Jesus had risen as a barrier between him and the Province of Asia. There was no longer any interdict lying over this beautiful and populous region, and he was free to execute the plans he had conceived when passing through Ephesus, --plans of evangelizing that city.
