On the beach of Giardini is the statue of a bishop, and beyond this, with several turrets on it, is Point Schisi), with its ground of lava, &c. Here stood the antient city of Naxos, the earliest of the Grecian settlements, now overwhelmed with lava, gardens, and vineyards. In the Bay of Taormina tolerable anchorage is afforded in from 8 to 30 fathoms, on a fine sandy bottom, near the shore, with mud farther out; but it is exposed to all easterly winds, excepting close up with either of the points, and therefore only to be taken in a case of necessity, when a central berth will be the best. At half a league to the south-westward from Point Schiso, the river Alcantara falls into the sea: this is one of the most considerable streams in Sicily. Between this river and Point Alcorati, a distance of 7 miles, is comprised the district of Mascali, which is exuberantly fertile, and annually produces 90,000 pipes of wine. Near Alcorati are the flourishing villages of Riposto and Giarre: the ground here is unfit for anchorage. At two miles south-westward from Point Schisd is a loading-place, called Casa Cottone, where timber and grain are embarked. POINT TOCCO and ACI REALE.--At 5 miles southward from Point Alcorati is Point Tocco, a precipitous mass of basaltic lava, converted into a mole, and forming a small port called the Marina of Aci. The town of Ad Reale is westward of this, and stands on extensive streams of lava, in a healthy and fertile situation.
