The author worked with Hussein in the 1970s and is therefore able to add personal experience to the reader's understanding of the terrifying, yet charismatic, dictator. The book seeks to explain why Saddam behaves the way he does: for recognition after being orphaned and brought up by a destitute uncle; for control of his country; for leadership of the Arab world; for mastery of the technology of destruction. It is the story of a man who, with the encouragement of western governments, made his country the most advanced in the Arab world in the 1970s, and through personal ambition led it to disaster at the end of the 1980s, now fights for its survival.

I was looking for a book that would explain Saddam Hussein. This book does that very well. Saddam Hussein grew up in what could only be described as a very tough neighborhood. He had thugs and drunks as role models. He used his natural instincts of survival to attach himself to powerful people and to make himself indispensible. He had ambitious goals for himself and his country, but he realized many of these goals by eliminating the opposition. The United States supported Saddam Hussein for many years with economic aid and by enabling him to obtain weapons and chemical weapons capabilities. When he went to war with Iran the U.S. supported him against fundamentalist power in Iran. When it no longer suited the U.S. Saddam became the enemy and the "monster". I think this book should be required reading for every American .
