The Meuse Army had the task of preventing the enemy escaping towards Montm6dy, and was to detach two of its corps to the right bank of the river. The Third Army was to cut off the retreat to Mezieres by moving to the westward of Sedan, and, by the occupation of strong artillery positions on the near bank of the Meuse, to harass the camps and movements of any troops in the valley. The Guard and XII Corps crossed the river near Letanne (east of Beaumont), and, preceded by their respective cavalry divisions, advanced on Carignan and Douzy, and swept the country between the Meuse and the Chiers. There was evidence everywhere of disorderly retreat; tents, wagons, provisions and baggage were scattered over roads and fields. Troops of the rear-guard were met at Douzy and driven out of it, and the cavalry pushed forward to the vicinity of Sedan. In the evening the XII Corps occupied Douzy, with the Guard on the other side of the railway. The outposts of the two corps extended in a curve from the Meuse to the Belgian frontier, at a distance of about five miles from the French encampment on the Givonne. The IV Corps had ample work in collecting the materiel left on the battlefield, and remained at Mouzon.
