Tim and Nick are so happy and in love that they are in the cutesy lovey duvy names phase of their relationship. Snowman is one of the better nicknames Nick calls Tim, (which Tim and I love.) With Tim living in San Francisco and Nick living at the Russian River area, their long distance relationship is hard on the both of them. When they are together, their time is very valuable to them both. (They behave as if they will never have sex again, ever.) Naturally, Tim learns more about Nick. Nick had an ex-boyfriend, who now lives in prison. What could he be in prison for? Is Nick guilty by association too? So when a weekend that does not go according as planned, because Nick is expecting his cousin in for a visit, Tim gets drunk and behaves very stupid. When Nick?s cousin fails to show, he finds Tim kissing Theodore?s hunky nephew. To Tim?s credit, he chases after him, but to no avail. Nick is in New Orleans because there has been a death in his family.
Aunt Ruth is living in Tim?s former one bedroom and working as bartender at Arts. She meets the Magic Child?s grandpa, Sam. They are falling in love, but taking it slow. Sam is ridiculously wealthy, and he travels the world.
Both Aunt Ruth and Tim are comparing and discussing one another?s relationship together. Aunt Ruth is going on about how wonderful and thoughtful Sam is, and Tim is bitter and disappointed about how bad things are going for him in their relationship. Aunt Ruth loves and cares for Tim enough to reassure him that things will work out, if he wants them to.
Aunt Ruth is reading in the paper about the young man who drowned in the Russian River, and seems to be digging for another mystery to solve.
The magical allure of San Francisco tarnishes, when Aunt Ruth discovers that Tim is HIV positive, and that others she knows, cares for, and works with are also HIV positive. Aunt Ruth is tore up about finding out this way. There is a lot for her to learn about the disease, since its strong portrayal in Middle America media years ago. She decides to go on the internet and learn more for herself.
Tim reminisces about his first encounter with Phil, through the novel. The memory is broken and that keeps you curious and dying for more. Because for Tim, this was very embarrassing and humiliating experience in his life.
Nick suspects foul play, because he and his cousin Nate swam in the Russian River growing up. Nick believes that Nate, a New Orleans narcotics cop, was dead before he hit the water, but he and his family will never know the cause of death, because the body was cremated and shipped to New Orleans to be buried in the family plot. (Why was he naked? Why are the dead bodies found naked? It must be an understanding for murders in San Francisco.)
Aunt Ruth makes a new friend with Nick?s grandmother, the author Amanda Musgrove. She?s genuinely interested in hearing about Aunt Ruth?s adventure with the cowboy murderer.
Why is Nick being targeted by a joker of a killer? Can Tim survive the killer?s mishaps in order to amend their relationship? What is the real reason Tim hates Phil so much, and can there finally be forgiveness? Things heat up as the weather cools off and Christmas approaches. But, who will live to celebrate the holidays at Artie and Arturo?s extra special Christmas party?
