During two short seasons at the track, Ruffian was hailed as the greatest thoroughbred filly of all time. Unbeaten in her first ten starts, she shattered one record after another, dazzling crowds with both her beauty and her brilliant speed. Then tragedy struck on the afternoon of July 6, 1975. Ruffian broke down-on the lead-in the middle of a match race at Belmont Park. Later that night she had to be destroyed. Ruffian: Burning from the Start is the story of this exceptional filly, a horse so dominating, so powerful, that writer Walter Farley once suggested she was more like the fictional legend, the Black Stallion, than any colt he had ever seen. Beginning with her earliest days in Kentucky, the book follows Ruffian at every stage of her career and through the agony of her final hours- venturing behind the scenes of the racing world and exploring the politics and personalities that came together to shape this extraordinary filly's fate.

This book follows the life of filly Ruffian-who from the time she won her first race in record time-was a wonder on the track. She dazzled everyone who saw her from the way she carried herself on the track to just how big a filly she was. NO one doubted her courage but her terrible breakdown and her fight to live are heartbreaking. She was buried at Belmont park and anyone who goes there can see her grave marked by a horseshoe hedge and flowers just past the finish line. For anyone who loves horses and loves thoroughbreds, this book is a delight. It is sad --but her memory lives on in her story and in her race record. Much like recent great fillies, RAGS TO RICHES AND EIGHT BELLES-she had a special way about that anyone who ever saw her remembered. A wonderful read.

Ruffian: A wondrous Horse
Ruffian is a horse that I find hard to describe because she was everything to me. I'd like to say that anyone would love this book, however, one definitely should have a love for horses and horseracing to fully understand what she stands for. To his day Ruffian's feats have not been duplicated and I doubt they will be. I am partial to this book because Ruffian and I have been through a lot together but I'm hopeful others will find a connection and enjoy the reading experience.
