APPENDIX EUCKEN'S PHILOSOPHY AS AN ACTIVISM Since the opening of the year 1907 Eucken has published two additional volumes--the 'Fundamentals of a New Philosophy of Life' (' Grundlinien einer neuen Lebensanschauung') and the 'Main Problems of the Philosophy of Religion at the Present Time' (' Hauptprobleme der Religionsphilosophie der Gegenwart'). The latter treatise, which deals with the relation of religion to personal experience and to history, and, in conclusion, discusses the essential meaning of Christianity, is, on the whole, of a simple and popular character. It is, moreover, rich with the distinctive convictions of the new idealism, and will be widely welcomed as a fresh and attractive introduction to Eucken's ' Philosophy of Religion.' The 'Grundlinien' is a far more elaborate work, and sheds much additional light on Eucken's previous presentations of his own philosophy. The philosophy remains essentially what it was, though the fresh method of approach, the care taken to differentiate the New Idealism from other typical philosophies, and the more definite discussion of such leading ideas as those of Truth and Reality, give a quite distinctive importance to the new work. But unchanged as the philosophy undoubtedly remains, variations in emphasis can be distinctly detected. The stress laid on action is particularly noticeable. Indeed, the main significance of the 'Grundlinien' may be said to lie in the central position which it assigns to Action. On p. 210 of this volume we find a section entitled 'Activism, a Profession of Faith ' (' Das Bekenntniss zum Aktivismus').
