In September AD9 half of Rome's western army was ambushed in a German forest. 14000 men under General Varus, were wiped out by Germanic tribes led by 27 year old Arminius.
A good book. Shortcomings are errors in facts, especially concerning updates on details concerning Tony Clunn's findings. None effect the story, but a concern. Further, as an ex-military officer, I think the Murdoch paints Varus in too favorable of a light. A commander that does not listen to his subordinates or has good, independent intelligence sources is a poor leader, simple as that.
Murdoch makes up for it with excellent final 3 chapters.
