The thoughts and deeds of the Romantics took place in a society that was in turmoil, and the movement looked to influence this upheaval - partly by means of a conservative defense against the French Revolution, and partly through the liberal pursuit of modernity. The book also emphasizes a second aspect that has so far been neglected in history and social science. It broadly examines German and European Romanticism ranging from the structural analysis of Romanticism to the critical evaluation of key intellectual and political figures as well as the movement's subsequent reception.
