Este libro inicia con dos trabajos que revisan caracteristicas y situaciones particulares de la tradicion romancistica en Mexico y Argentina. La tradicion del Romancero en America ha sido poco estudiada y es necesario hacer una reflexion profunda sobre ella tanto desde la perspectiva de las caracteristicas y la problematica general de la tradicion hispanica, como desde sus peculiaridades concretas debidas a la evolucion de la cultura tradicional, las formas de recoleccion y la presencia de otros generos que se trasmiten oralmente. Un segundo apartado lo forman las reflexiones teoricas y formales sobre uno de los puntos centrales de la literatura tradicional: variacion y conservacion. Otro grupo de trabajos se centra en aspectos tematicos que tienen gran pertinencia en la caracterizacion del Romancero hispanico y que establecen nexos con la baladistica internacional que comparte los mismos temas. Finalmente se tocan dos aspectos mas de la tradicion romancistica; por un lado el estudio de la presencia de los pliegos sueltos en America, tema que ha sido muy poco analizado y finalmente la configuracion de romanceros tematicos como una forma de publicacion y difusion de la tradicion romancistica.
