Seller's Description:
Max and Albert Hirmer. VG+ / VG dj has staining and discoloration. Olive green cloth boards, gilt titling, white DJ with black/color illus.; 368 pp.; 1, 430 illustrations. From the DJ: This magnificent presentation of the coins of Republican and Imperial Rome, a span of over one thousand years, is illustrated with superb photographs specially taken for the book by Max and Albert Hirmer of Munich.
This book gets recommended on a few Roman coin sites so I thought I would get myself a copy. Its split into 3 parts. 1. is a gallop through Roman history referencing the coin plates as it goes. 2. Is the plates themselves, which are good but only in black and white (I imagine full colour was probably too expensive when it was printed). 3, is the info for the plates. Given its age it is a good introduction to roman coins, and I enjoyed browsing it, but it is not a full catalogue, and I wouldn't recommend it as one. The black and white plates now look a bit dowdy when compared with ERIC II. But if you are building up a library of Roman coin books, then once you have your Sears and ERIC II etc, this should be near the top of your buy next list.
