me and my class have read this book, then we did this project for it. i think it was a good book, because it showed how black people suffered back then. how the consequences were back then, but i think it was a good book.

lyrical and engaging
This is an excellent book that deals with very disturbing themes and imagery in a matter of fact way. Seen through the eyes of a 9 year old girl, you are taken through life in the deep south for black people not long after slavery was abolished. From the day to day details of life and education, to the deeper and more disturbing themes of racism, injustice and violence, the book doesn't skimp on anything. I would not recommend this for a young teenager or for someone easily disturbed as in many ways it is not a cheering story, but at the same time, I thoroughly enjoyed it, although I'm not sure that enjoy is quite the right word.
