Rocks and Minerals is one of many volumes in the lavishly illustrated Golden Guide series. This book serves as a succinct guide to rock and mineral identification. Crystal form, hardness, specific gravity, cleavage, color, and magnetism are some of the ways minerals are identified. Igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks are described as well. Igneous rocks are formed from magmas?molten mixtures of minerals, often rich in gases, found deep inside the earth. Sedimentary rocks are formed by action of water, wind, or organic agents. Metamorphic rocks have been changed by heat, pressure, or chemical action. We also learn about the uses of rocks and minerals in our daily lives and their economic significance. I used this book as a supplement to my college textbook for my rocks and minerals class and found it quite helpful. Highly recommended.
