Ideally, a compilation CD that isn't aimed at hardcore collectors should offer both quality and quantity -- in other words, an abundance of essential, first-rate recordings (enough to last more than 70 minutes) and no filler. But in some cases, labels end up choosing between quality and quantity. Listeners either end up with a CD that is lengthy but full of filler, or they are given a CD that sticks to the essentials but is skimpy. This budget CD, which JCI assembled in 1988 for its Baby Boomer Classics series, is a perfect example of the latter. Clocking in at a mere 33 minutes, Rockin' Fifties sacrifices quantity but not quality. The bad news is that this compilation (which, as its title indicates, focuses on 1950s rock & roll) is skimpy -- the good news is that every one of its 12 tracks is a winner. There are no alternate takes or rarities on Rockin' Fifties; JCI sticks to the major hits of that era, offering well-known, definitive classics like Buddy Holly's "Peggy Sue," Fats Domino's "Ain't That a Shame," Jerry Lee Lewis' "Great Balls of Fire," and Chuck Berry's "Maybelline." Those gems are essential listening if one has even a casual interest in 1950s rock & roll, and the same goes for the Big Bopper's "Chantilly Lace," Larry Williams' "Bony Maronie," and Carl Perkins' version of "Blue Suede Shoes" (which is excellent even though it isn't as well-known as Elvis Presley's version).
