Excerpt from Rock Phosphates and Other Mineral Fertilisers: Their Origin, Value, and Sources of Supply HE need of some concise description of the sources of supply of mineral fertilisers has, to my mind, been apparent for some time past; in fact, this pamphlet is the outcome, in the first place, of notes taken while looking up the literature on phosphate deposits. Reliable descriptions of the deposits and material from which mineral fertilisers originate, and their modes of occurrence. Should prove useful to the pro spector. And for this reason several verbatim descriptions by different authors have been inserted. In a work of this kind, covering, as it does, so much ground, one is, of necessity, under obligation to many workers. The observations of any one person, however capable and industrious, would be a very incomplete record. Various Opinions are expressed on one and the same deposit, and the necessity devolves upon the author to sift the evidence and strike as near to the true version as is possible. References to various authors will be found in the text. In any partially explored and exploited country such information as is herein afforded should not only have an interest for those who use fertilisers, but be of value to everyone who travels about with eyes open, if only for com parison, for the discovery of similar deposits to those described may mean a fortune to the discoverer. Up-to-date statistics are not available, but the latest obtainable are given. Some idea of the magnitude and com mercial importance of the industries will be apparent from the statistics, and the descriptions of the deposits will show the intelligent prospector where and for what to look for similar occurrences. There is no apparent reason why rock phosphate deposits, nitrate deposits, or potash and salt beds, other than those already discovered, should not exist in Australia. Nature, for some unaccountable reason, often places her best treasures in localities that are hopelessly barren for other purposes. It is impossible to say what value may lie beneath the surface in those flat areas of slight elevation that stretch inland from the coast until they have been prospected.
