Madacy's Rock On '70s series is a low-priced roundup of popular songs from each year of the decade. The songs are wide-ranging and, although they seem thrown together with little regard to context or pacing, do a fairly good job of recreating what 45 minutes or so of listening to a decent AM station would have been like. The 1977 volume contains great pop hits like Glen Campbell's "Southern Nights," David Soul's "Don't Give Up on Us," Al Stewart's "Year of the Cat," and Crystal Gayle's "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue." To keep things close to exciting there are a couple of disco hits (KC & the Sunshine Band's "I'm Your Boogie Man" and Rose Royce's "I Wanna Get Next to You") and the sublimely silly soul of the Floaters' "Float On." The collection is a bit on the skimpy side to be considered an essential purchase. The track list, while full of classic songs, does go a ways in explaining the birth and blossoming of punk rock taking place around this time. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi
