I love this book. What a wonderful combination of outstanding writing and magnificent illustrations. Academy Award winner Doug Chiang (he was creative director for George Lucas' Industrial Light and Magic) came up with the story years later, after drawing a picture of tall ships and flying saucers as a teenager. A sketch which he found in 1996 and which haunted him until he found the time to draft his story. " Ender" creator Orson Scott Card was brought in to turn Chiang's story into an engrossing novel. Together they have brought forth a magnificent book you have got to see and read.
Noted Hollywood Director James Cameron says: "Having had the pleasure of working with both Doug Chiang and Orson Scott Card on different projects, I can certainly vouch for them as visionaries in their respective media, It's inevitable that they should find each other and dance this astounding duet. "Robota" is a work of stunning beauty."
The story of "Robota" is simple and elegant. A race of benevolent sentient robots called the Olms come and warn the human population of their planet's impending doom. They give the pre-industrial humans high technology, robot-building capabilities, and genetic engineering to save themselves. But humans, being what they are, lose sight of the original reason for the gifts and instead use them to destroy themselves. But this does not take place on earth but rather on a planet called Orpheus thousands of years before it collides with the proto-Earth to form our moon and enable life to germinate on the third planet.
