My! This must be a good book - I've bought it 3 times! Originally at the Guggenheim show in '94 as a present for my then wife, again as a replacement for that one, when it was stolen and a third for myself when we split.
This book is wonderful; as a retrospective catalogue, a monograph on a very interesting now 77 year old artist, spanning his full and varied artistic career, with an overview of thought proving works and as a visual resource, documenting a great many works in early B&W and colour plates.
This is no glossy coffee table book, it?s raw grey-card cover and soft matt paper through out is unpretentious which allows you to view the documentary photographs of the work. Its witty hardback cover is based on his I-BOX self-portrait; with the artists? outward smiling gaze and name covering his modesty which may raise some eyebrows.
It has readable essays and several in depth contributions, with well written chronological notes accompanying significant works.
If only all retrospective monographs were so simple and beautiful. Cheers, enjoy this one and return to it, again and again.
