Forty years after it first published an issue on legendary photographer Robert Frank, the Swiss magazine du is publishing Part Two. For years, the editors of du have talked about collaborating once again with the most important living Swiss photographer (Frank was born in Zurich in 1924). Though the photographer has long since finished with photo journalism, dedicating himself, since 1962, to filmmaking, he has made here a magical exception. Together with du, Frank has developed an idea for an issue that stretches the concept of photography to its limits. An all-encompassing self-examination, sometimes looking back with melancholia, sometimes moving ahead with a visisionary impetus, this publication assembles classic images, new Polaroid works, traces of thoughts, rediscoveries of never-before-shown photographs, and visual diary notes, together with Frank's selections of favorite texts by Kerouac, Burroughs, and Elio Vittorini.

Now from the prestigious Yugensha publishing house, the contact sheets for The Americans is available to collectors in a stunning display worthy of its subject's importance. In 81 large sheets (two images from the book appear on two of the sheets--thus 81 sheets rather than 83), this important meta-document makes visible Frank's picture-making process, as well as illuminating the crucial editing choices that made The Americans such a profoundly seminal book. From the National Gallery of Art, Washington: "First published in France in 1958, and in the United States in 1959, Robert Frank's book The Americans changed the course of 20th-century photography and helped the nation see itself more clearly. In 83 photographs, Frank looked beneath the surface of American life to reveal a people often plagued by racism, ill-served by their politicians, and rendered numb by a rapidly expanding consumer culture. Yet he also found new areas of beauty in overlooked corners of the country and in the process helped redefine the icons of America. In his photographs of diners, cars, and even the road itself, Frank pioneered a seemingly intuitive, immediate, off-kilter style that was as innovative as his subjects. Also groundbreaking was the way he tightly sequenced his photographs in The Americans, linking them thematically, conceptually, formally, and linguistically to present a haunting picture of mid-century America. More an ode or a poem than a literal document, The Americans is as powerful and provocative today as it was 50 years ago."

(London and New York: Phaidon, 2004).]. As New in publisher's original cardboard shipping box. An excerpt from "The Photobook: A History, Volume 1" by Martin Parr and Gerry Badger: "Flower Is" is a memorial to his daughter, Andrea, who was killed in an airplane crash in Guatemala in 1974. The book is in three "stream-of-consciousness" suites, which correspond to three different periods in the photographer's life. The first suite consists of flower photographs taken in Paris between 1949 and 1951; the second, photographs of Detroit car factories and pictures of the American South in 1955; the third and final suite, photographs of Nova Scotia taken between 1976 and 1984. Robert Frank continues to call Nova Scotia home but visits New York, where he is sometimes "sighted" on one of his lonely walks. "The whole tenor of the book is forlorn, which may be the best adjective that describes Frank's work as a whole. Never have flowers, that most uplifting of photographic subjects, appeared so woebegone. Seldom has the manic activity of industrial manufacture seemed so pointless. And the Nova Scotia landscapes and still lifes (beautiful, bleak, elegiac) reveal an artist at the height of his powers but hardly at peace with the world or himself."
