The following morning his guard returned, and reported that they had left Allsman in a safe place. It is believed that this guard was followed by a number of Allsman s enemies, and that when the guard left him these enemies captured and executed him, and secreted his body in the underbrush. Twenty-three years later a gentleman in Palmyra received a letter from E. F.VVilson, of Newark, stating that the skeleton of Allsman was in the possession of Dr. McKim, of that place. He said that Dr. McKim got it from his father-in-law, Dr. Rose, who had died some years before, and who had found it on Troublesome creek, near where Allsman was supposed to have been murdered. He was positive that the skeleton was that of Allsman, and in this opinion he was supported by Dr. McKim, the postmaster, and a local Methodist minister. There were no bullet holes in the skull, however, and it is almost certainly known that Allsman was shot to death, and it is thought that the bullets which ended his life entered his head. Be this as it may, Allsman's relatives were not convinced that the right skeleton had been found, and they did not claim it. The secret of the sepulchre of the murdered man, and the names of his executioners, will, in all human probability, go to the grave with the few who are yet living, and could tell if they were so disposed.
