The Variations are very much in the vein of other Spanish-influenced works by French composers: colorful and theatrical. The sonatas are not quite what is expected of mid-twentieth century compositions. They are not unpleasantly atonal or dissonant, but rather use a meandering tonality, almost like a jazz improv piece has been adapted into a Classical structure.
