Casadesus' finest qualities -- his secure handling of form, his smooth integration of styles, and his clear-headed ideas -- are readily apparent in the two Piano Trios, Op. 6, and Op. 53; the Sonata for cello and piano, Op. 22; and the Hommage à Chausson for violin and piano, Op. 51. Casadesus' refined, somewhat Impressionistic music seems to work best in chamber settings, and duo and trio combinations afforded him the most appropriate medium for his intimate expressions and lively repartee, which this ensemble presents with sympathy and energy. There is one drawback to this CD, however, which should be noted: the extremely close recording catches too many extraneous sounds. Particularly distracting are someone's heavy breathing and occasional grunts, and the periodic clacking noises produced by cellist Paul Julien, who inadvertently and frequently strikes the...
