In the Lakes, most roads were for centuries poor and narrow, especially the mountain passes. But road improvement and construction began again in the 18th century with the turnpikes. At the same time the number of visitors began to increase, reflected in better maps and new guide books. The improved roads meant that agricultural improvements could be made, and the landscape (and roads) of much of the area were redesigned during enclosure.
