When it was known in the village that the squire was looking out for some family with whom to board Gabriel, Widow French went to the Abbey and asked whether she might have him. "But my good Mrs. French," said the squire, "are you sure that you have well counted the cost of taking charge of this gipsy lad? by which I mean, have you considered that he will probably prove a very troublesome inmate? He has been allowed to run wild all his life, and will, I suspect, need a good deal of taming and managing." "I don't feel afraid, sir," said the widow. "I have brought up two sons of my own, who have now gone to service, and you know, sir, how well they have turned out. My husband died before they were twelve years old, and I'm sure I was sadly afraid they might prove too much for me, with no father to look after them, but I found the way to manage them, and they never gave me much trouble. I shouldn't feel afraid of taking Gabriel to live with us, and I'd make him comfortable, and do my, best for him if he came." "And you are prepared to have all sorts of F tricks played you, my good woman?" said the squire; "for to judge by the boy's face, he is full of fun and roguery."
