If you have ever wondered if it is possible to cross the United States by water, this is your answer. This guy did it! With lots of planning, research, a dogged determination, a revolving crew (and probably a considerable monetary outlay) William Least Heat Moon put his unique boat, River Horse, into the water on the east coast and traveled across America to the west coast! True, there were some portages, but in comparison to the water miles, not a significant amount to dilute the story. In the telling, he mixes history, little known facts, modern Americana, personal foilbles, humor, fear, despair...and unfailing optimism in a very readable fashion taking the reader along on his most amazing journey. I bought two copies of this book. One to lend to my friends and the other for my own safekeeping and reference. Worth every penny!
