UP to the year 1868, the Seventh-day Adventists' field of labor had been confined to the United States, and to that portion of it north of the southern boundary of Missouri and east of the Missouri River. At a meeting to consider the fields and the distribution of labor, during a session of the General Conference which was held in Battle Creek, Mich., May 28, 1868, M. G. Kellogg made a personal appeal for the Conference to send laborers to California. Then and there Elder D. T. Bourdeau and myself each stated, for the first time in public, our impressions in regard to its being our duty to labor in that State. It was made a subject of prayer, from day to day, until May 31, when it was decided that we should go to California. Elder White wrote an appeal for $1000, with which to purchase a tent and send missionaries to the Pacific Coast. He pledged $25 himself to start the enterprise. At that time the railroad across the plains lacked five hundred miles of completion, so it was necessary to go by water via Central America. We left Battle Creek June 8, spending about two weeks in western New York, purchasing a tent and preparing for the journey. June 24 we sailed from New York City for California, by way of the. Isthmus of Darien, arriving in San Francisco, July 18, PROVIDENTIAL OPENINGS. 277 We found prices so high in San Francisco that it did not seem expedient to begin our labors with the tent in that city, so we presented the situation before the Lord in prayer, and plead with him to open the way.
