I picked this book up with great anticipation, as I grew up with Rin Tin Tin. Well, his great-great grandson or sometthing like that! The writing style is not my favorite as the story is presented from a reporter's perspective more than a story teller's. The thread that ran through the book was the dysfunction of the dog's master. The man never found healing and that set a somber tone for me. Truthfully, I did not finish the book. Some might enjoy it if they are interested in learning a bit of the history of dogs in entertainment and war.

interesting
I wanted to like this book more than I did. The story takes many strange turns and was haunted by crazy people. It is not the author's fault, and she followed the tale where it lead her. In some ways it's a tale of greed and in others it's about love and loyalty. It's less about the dog(s) than the people who exploited them.
