Imo perfectly, the whole field of the inquiry, and to mark the limits of current knowl edge respecting the races of mankind as the same are known to us at the close of our splendid century. How far short of a perfect accomplishment the writer has come, how many and serious are the im perfections of his work, he is painfully aware; but he presumes, as hitherto, upon the good will and favor of the public, to whom he now delivers the results of his latest study in the Spirit and with the trust of one who, proud of his age and country, would fain contrib ute something to the intellectual re sources, progress, and happiness of that great and glorious people with whom he is allied in race descent and destiny.
