This is first-class history. The author conveys what is known about Richard, which is, to me, a surprising amount given the time when he lived. He also debunks a number of the myths about Richard and his brother King John and about life in the Medieval Period. The author provides good illustrations and good maps.
The only drawback is that the descriptions of military operations get tedious at times, especially toward the end of the book. However, I recommend this to anyone interested in the Crusades, English History, or French History.
