Best known for the recordings of bass icon DJ Magic Mike, the Orlando, FL-based Cheetah Records moved into techno with Radioactive Goldfish, whose electronic, club-oriented Rhythm and Rave came out on Cheetah's Majii label in 1992. You won't hear any actual singing or rapping on abrasive, hard-edged cuts like "L.S.D. Is The Bomb," "Phobia (Latin For Fear)" and "Pink Potato"--rather, Rhythm and Rave is essentially a collection of instrumental techno tracks that have been united with scattered samples and soundbites. This CD is about beats and tracks, not vocal personality, and those samples range from the passionate screams of James Brown to soundbites from various documentaries and films. Rhythm and Rave isn't for the unseasoned techno listener; you have to have some understanding of the rave and underground club culture of the 1980s and 1990s to appreciate what's going on. In a nutshell, Rhythm and Rave sounds like the soundtrack to an early 1990s rave--not necessarily a fantastic or magnificent rave, but a decent one. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi
