"The 2008 Biennale of Sydney" book has been tailored to create a unique and visionary publication, a meditation in drawings and texts on the theme Revolutions Forms That Turn. Black-and-white artists drawings and handwritten texts will replace images of film stills or installation views, creating a hardcover book that exists as an art object rather than a formal document of the exhibition. 200 drawings will be included by over 100 artists. Existing drawings have been selected for some historic artists such as Alexander Calder, Marcel Duchamp, Aleksandr Rodchenko, and Jean Tinguely, while many living artists, such as Paul Pfeiffer,William Kentridge, Janet Cardiff & George Bures-Miller, Paul Chan, Mark Dion and Tracey Moffatt, have produced new drawings especially for this publication. In some instances, artists have provided a diary entry, song lyrics or other notes rather than a sketch. Artists sketches and notations on the theme of "Revolutions Forms That Turn" are paired with theoretical texts by prominent art historians and curators from around the world. Original essays (3000-4000 words each) have been written by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, Jonathan Crary, Iwona Blazwick and Charles Harrison. Additionally, smaller texts will be included by ten curatorial Comrades including: Hans Ulrich Obrist, Massimiliano Gioni, Russell Storer and Iara Boubnova.
