This '80s follow-up to The Wizard of Oz is based upon two of L. Frank Baum's later Oz books. In Return to Oz (a version that may be a bit too scary for young children), Auntie Em sends Dorothy to a sanitarium where hopefully she will clear her head from all of the "Oz nonsense." This doesn't work, for soon Dorothy manages to return to Oz, but things have definitely changed. She finds her old friends turned to stone and discovers that the awful Nome King has taken over Oz. Don't get me wrong, I love the 1939 classic movie, "The Wizard of Oz." But I also love the original books in L. Frank Baum's series (and their continuation by Ruth Plumly Thompson) and have always felt that those who knew only the movie were missing out on an amazing amount of magical experience. "Return to Oz" is an amalgam of the next two books in Baum's series, "The Land of Oz" and "Ozma of Oz," and although it does stick the action into a framing story, it is quite true to the books. Highly recommended to fans of the Baum books and as an entree to the truly wonderful world of Oz, for those who don't know that there are so many more Oz adventures out there!

A must see DVD
I loved the 1st Wizard of Oz, and at 69 still do. But my nieces, nephews and grandchildren prefer the Return to Oz. The animation, characters and scenery are great. Don't buy this film thinking it will be anything like the original - look at thru new eyes. Dorothy, Auntie Em have changed along with the scarecrow, the cowardly lion, and the tin man. New escapades abound. I would not hesitate to recommend to my friends and relatives, in fact I already have. During the ladies get together we watched the DVD. They enjoyed it immensely. This is for the young, and the young at heart.
Wait till you meet these new characters. Have fun!

return to oz
This movie wasn't as good as the first. It is worth watching however. If you can find it for cheap then go ahead and get it, if not then don't bother.

Much Better Than The Original Version
Maybe it's bcause I have a thing for the 80's or maybe it's something else, but you HAVE to watch this movie. It is much better than the original Wizard of Oz. Sure, there's no music, but there's a talking chicken, a hall of like a thousand heads, a talking rock, and emeralds everywhere! Beat THAT 1939 "Wizard of Oz". This is among my favorite movies and it is so creepy that one will be enticed to view it. The characters are stranger and everything seems so apathetic and all. I LOVE THIS MOVIE!
