There were two rajahs in Darrang, styled the "bora" (greater) and "saru" (lesser) rajahs, both belonging Revenue-free lands for the sup port of the title of the rajahs of to the same family, a branch of the Cooch Behar Darrang. t ' house, to which also belong the rajahs of Sidli (Bidyagong) Bijni. The rajahs had a quantity of revenue-free land for the maintenance of their titles allotted to each. The greater rajah, Ananta Narayan, died in May, 1871, and the lesser in December, 1874. The land granted to the former was resumed during the year under report, and that belonging to the latter immediately after its close. But the Government has lately, as an act of grace, restored the lands to the heirs of the deceased rajahs. 128. The Chief Commissioner was surprised to find, when reviewing certain cases of resumption of nisf kheraj lands in Alienation of nisf kheraj lands. granted for the support of the the district oi Darrang, that the lands which were Darrang rajah's family. ' granted in 1839 for the support of the family of the rajahs of Darrang on favourable terms continued to be assessed on the same favourable terms even when they had passed out of the possession of the family. He inquired into the matter, and found that the terms were" granted to the rajahs only, and that, if alienated, the lands were to become liable to assessment at full rates. He also found that the question at what rates the lands alienated from the family should be assessed had been raised in 1858, and the Government of Bengal, in its letter No. 1,317, dated 2nd June, 1860, had ruled that the lands, ...
