C The position selected for the construction of this bridge is a point about half a mile above the George town aqueduct. The river is here, at common high water, 1030 feet wide on the surface. The bed is generally of rock, and the depth very variable. At a point about 450 feet from the water's edge, on the Maryland side, several masses of granite protrude above the surface of the river in all stages of the water.
