Not illustrated. 1840 Excerpt: ...The interior administration resembles that of the preparatory schools. When the annual examination of the pupils takes place, a general of the army is the president of the board. The cavalry school receives--1st, officers who are proposed to become military Cavalry School, instructors; 2nd, pupils from the preparatory schools; 3rd, young soldiers intended for non-commissioned officers, brigadiers, and trumpeters. All the regiments of cavalry and horse artillery of the guard and the line are to send an officer to the cavalry school yearly; the squadrons of train artillery, train engineers, and waggon train, an officer every two years--the officer to be a lieutenant, aged at least 30. He is to be proposed by the body of officers to the inspector-general, and shall be chosen for his aptitude and good conduct. They are to remain two years (or at most three) in the cavalry school; they are to bring their horses, and to be on trial as to their aptitude during three months, in which they are to be formally received. The pupils from the preparatory schools must have passed the preliminary examinations. The course is of three (or at most four) years; after which they are to be spread among the different regiments. The education of the cavalry school is to be wholly military, comprising cavalry service in campaign, forts, and quarters, riding, foot and horse exercise, rifle and pistol shooting, manoeuvres, knowledge or management of horses, and the same system of examination and advancement as in the other special schools.
