Seller's Description:
Very good. Octavo, 479pp., plus Appendix. Very good in original brown stamped cloth boards, marred by a 2-inch portion missing from the top of the spine, where the title would be, and wearing at the corners and spine heads. Ex-library, but with minimal markings and no pocket in rear. An important association copy, SIGNED and INSCRIBED by the author on the front paste-down to Henry B. Anthony, who at the time of publication was governor of Rhode Island, and an influential member of the Whig party (he later joined the Know-Nothings and then the Republican Party) Later elected to the Senate from Rhode Island, Anthony eventually rose to become President Pro Tempore of the Senate. This book, which contains the minutes of the discussion of the constitutional convention of California, contains long passages about issues that are eerily relevant today, including the use of English and Spanish in official state documents, immigration regulations, and California's relationship with Mexico. But for the disappointing missing spine piece, a very nice, unrestored and original copy.
