Excerpt from Report of the Botanist on the Grasses and Forage Plants, and the Catalogue of Plants During the year I made a short examination of the grasses and forage plants of the elevated region of the northwestern part of the state, particularly of Box Butte and Dawes counties. Incidentally a good many observations were made upon the vegetation of the region traversed in going to and returning from the counties particularly visited. Between Lincoln and Grand Island the ordinary cultivated grasses and clovers are abundantly grown. In Seward, York, and Hamilton counties I saw fine fields of red clover and timothy. Some of these were equal to any I have ever seen in any part of the United States. Beyond the Platte river the cultivated grasses decrease rapidly, the country being still quite new, but stray plants of clover and timothy seen here and there show that these will do well when the farmer once turns his attention to their growth.
