In the canton of Argovia there are lour or five ribbon manufacturers of some consequence, and a good number of little manufacturers of the same article, and efforts are making still further to encourage the manufacture; the ribbons made here are generally of a common description, watered, and principally intended for the consumption of the country people of Switzerland and Germany, who still preserve a sort of national costume. But it is principally in the town of Basil, and in the town and canton of Zurich, that the silk manufacture is most extensively carried on. At Basil the manufacture is wholly confined to ribbons, and it has been carried to an extraordinary pitch of perfection. This manufacture was increased by the French Protestants who were exiled from their own country by the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. This ribbon manufacture was formerly chiefly confined to the same description of ribbons as those of Argovia, but in the present day they compete strongly with the manufactures of St. Etienne, St. Chamond, &c. Almost all the Basil manufacturers are large capitalists, and are consequently able to work for a very small profit; they are generally satisfied with the most trifling addition to the ordinary rate of interest for money. The silk manufacture of the town of Zurich dates as far back as the 13th century; at the close of the 15th century it was nearly extinct; half a century afterwards it experienced a revival, owing to the establishment of a number of Italian families who embraced Protestantism, and who, either to find employment for the silk produced on their estates in Italy, or as a source of prosperity for themselves, revived this branch of trade.
