When he was young, his gang robbed Al Capone of a large sum of money and loot in Chicago. He becomes a man on the run and we learn what he does with the money and how he remained undetected for the rest of his life. Many of Jesse's life's adventures are told from the perspective of a man who was his friend but knew nothing about his past until he died. Jesse bequeaths his wealth and life story to this man and explains why he was unwilling to ever talk about his roots. He relates many of his experiences while on the run. One story is about the search for a cannon that was rumored to have been lost by the US Army in the Idaho wilderness when they pursued Chief Joseph in the Nez Perce War of 1887. Jesse conducts the research pertaining to that artifact and he organizes an expedition to find it. The account of that treasure hunting expedition provides the reader a glimpse into events based on that history.
