This is Porter's first spy thriller, and while it's not his best work, it's definitely worthwhile. The plot for this one is complicated enough to be a challenging and satisfying read, but it's not quite as smooth and well crafted as the plots of his later books. My only real beef is with the editing apparently done by the publisher--lots of mistakes, such as missing words and a lack of knowledge of London or insufficient research. For example, "army and navy stores" is a proper noun that should be Army & Navy Stores. Errors like this, while disconcerting, are certainly not fatal. For those who like this genre, it was a fine read. I enjoyed the book, I recommend it, and I'm glad that I discovered Henry Porter.
